Web Design vs. Graphic Design, What’s the Difference?

Before going into the differences, let’s first understand both of these terms.

What is Graphic Design?
Graphic design is the procedure of visual communication and formation of new solutions to the problems using one or more of photography, typography, and illustrations which can be in 2D or 3D, on paper or digitally. They are responsible for making graphics which are later published print work or even websites, also it doesn’t involves any programming.

What is Web Design?
Web design is the formation of a new solution to a problem in the web medium. A web designer has limitations on what they can do & implement. They need to keep in mind that websites look attractive, load fast and run efficiently. This involves programming of HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and also Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for styling & designing the website for better look & feel.

What are the differences?

    1.    Medium
The main difference between graphic designing and web designing is the medium. Graphic Designing Experts often have more freedom because they are not restricted by programming, resolution or speed.

Web Design professionals have to balance a good design with effectiveness and speed for the web. There are some experts out there that can do both of these positions as one, but it is rare that they are powerful since they tend to have more strengths in one or the other.

    2.   Information Spreading
Graphic design is a traditional information media design, it usually expand through posting, sales, mail delivery and other forms of communication. This kind of expand is only suitable for a small range with high cost. In terms of audience, the graphic design can be accepted by different age groups.

While the website is not suitable for all age groups. By the continuous popularity of network information in the future and the continuous development of the terminal media user experience, the online information could be retrieved and accepted by more people.

    3.   Visual Elements
The color mode of graphic design and web design are completely different.  Professional graphic designers expect their project’s colors to be consistent from the beginning to the end.

But when it comes to web designers they know very well that different devices will display the same color differently and may render images at different resolutions. Therefore, web designers have to work technically & apply engineering techniques to their designs.
